Activist Questions Viral Marketing Campaign of Deaf Transgendered Child (re: Ryland Whittington on YouTube)
Here is my Response Video with Closed Captions, Comments, and English Language Transcript to the The Whittington Family: Ryland’s Story video posted on May 27, 2014 on YouTube by “TheWhittingtonFamily”. In the description of my video on YouTube, I posed the following questions and comments that I encourage my readers to respond to either on our official Phoenix Genesis website or on our Official YouTube channel.
Do you think The Whittington Family: Ryland’s Story viral marketing video is immoral or justified? Do you feel that trans children at such a young age can make a determination of their gender? What is the right age to “transition” a child, if at all and how does Ryland’s hearing impairment affect him in this regard to make decisions? Should Ryland have a signal dog to help with his hearing impairment? Should the family have put their other young child in the video – esp. in a scene that exposes nudity? No one has called this video into question despite the fact that’s its been out for almost a week. Again, why is a video about a hearing impaired child not closed captioned? I am a supporter of the Transgender community and in no way am I attacking those with gender fluidity or the LGBTQ community. There are amazing people out there working hard for social justice and equality for all. What is under scrutiny is precisely HOW the Whittington Family went about presenting their story on YouTube.
TRANSCRIPT OF MY VIDEO (June 3, 2014):
Activist Questions Viral Marketing Campaign of Deaf Transgendered Child
(re: Ryland Whittington)
Hi, This is phoenixgenesis
Today I would like to respond on
the Whittington Family video
that’s gone viral on YouTube
about their son, Michael Ryland
who is an allegedly a hearing-impaired
I’m kind of outraged about this video.
I noticed there is absolutely no closed captions
on the video, or any
American Sign Language [ASL]
anything to help support the deaf community.
Ryland is allegedly completely hearing impaired
with cochlear implants.
I myself am hearing impaired.
I have a service dog,
known as a “signal dog”.
His name is Ray.
He helps mitigate my disability.
And I noticed also that the family had
complete control over the video.
It’s put on their [YouTube] channel,
yet they’ve disabled comments so that
people can’t respond to this.
And I’m making a call-to-arms right now
to everyone out there.
Please come to my video.
And let’s support the deaf community.
And, additionally, I noticed that
despite the fact that
they don’t allow comments,
they do allow a button to buy a song
that they are using on the video
from a commercial [music] group.
So, I want to know:
Are they going to step up to the plate?
Are they going to take this song
and help proceeds go to the
Or the transgendered community?
I mean, let’s support people with disabilities,
let’s support people specifically
with hearing impairments.
Please come and support me.
I’ve been an advocate for
disability rights since 1978.
I do rights for children with autism.
My grandson – in fact,
my boyfriend’s son’s child is autistic.
I’ve done all kinds of different areas of
people with disabilities.
I was raised in a family…
my uncle has cerebral palsy.
I was raised by my aunt and uncle
and grandparents and
I’m a real advocate.
Please, please, please,
come out here.
And let’s expose this.
And let’s get this going.
And get these closed captions
on this video.
Thank you very much.
You have a wonderful day.
Again, this is phoenixgenesis
for the site Phoenix Genesis.
And it’s pheonixgenesis.com.
Thank you very much
and have a wonderful day.
This is the end of my transcript. I hope this inspired you to think about these important and relevant issues.
